Al-Omari Mosque

Old town mosque on the foundations of a Byzantine church

The Al-Omari Mosque sits on the ridge of the old town and is the main historic mosque of Karak. Like several of its namesakes across the Levant, it is named for the second Caliph Omar ibn al-Khattab and stands on a site associated with the early Islamic conquest of the area. The current building is largely Ottoman, with simpler arcades and a single minaret.

Local tradition holds that the mosque rose on the foundations of an earlier Byzantine church. Non-Muslims are usually welcome outside prayer times if dressed modestly; ask politely before entering.
