Almost everyone comes to Karak for the castle, and rightly so — it is one of the great Crusader fortresses, layered with later Ayyubid and Mamluk work, and a manageable half-day visit. But the old town below is worth wandering too: Ottoman houses, a workaday souk, and a couple of small museums that fill in the layers of history not covered up on the rock.
