Europe-Asia Bridge

Cross between continents on foot — Atyrau straddles the official boundary

Atyrau's main bridge over the Ural River marks the official boundary between Europe and Asia. The city sits on both sides of this continental divide — the old settlement (formerly called Guriev) on the European bank, the newer development on the Asian side. Walking across the bridge is the most straightforward way to stand in two continents at once.

There is a marker on the bridge indicating the continental line, and it makes for a memorable photograph — if a slightly surreal one, given that the divide is a geographer's convention and the river looks much the same on both sides. The riverside promenade near the bridge is one of the more pleasant parts of the city, and a good place for an evening walk.

A story
The Ural River has been used as the boundary between Europe and Asia since the 18th century, when the Russian geographer Vasily Tatishchev proposed the Ural mountains and their river as the continental divide. In Atyrau, a sign on the bridge marks the exact point where you cross from one continent to the other — a fact that many visitors find more meaningful than they expect.
