Money
The currency is the Kyrgyz som (KGS). ATMs are widely available in Bishkek, Karakol and Osh, but rare or nonexistent in rural areas. Bring enough cash in som before heading to the mountains. Visa cards are accepted in many urban shops and restaurants; MasterCard less reliably. US dollars are useful as backup and easy to exchange.
Language
Kyrgyz and Russian are both official languages. Kyrgyz, a Turkic language, dominates in rural areas and the south. Russian is widely spoken in Bishkek and among older generations everywhere. English is limited, mainly spoken by younger people in the capital and those working in tourism. Learn a few words of Russian or Kyrgyz -- it goes a long way. Having key phrases and your destination written in Cyrillic is extremely helpful.
Safety
Kyrgyzstan is generally safe for travelers. The main risks are petty crime in Bishkek (pickpocketing at Osh Bazaar, bag-snatching) and the physical dangers of mountain travel (altitude sickness, rough roads, river crossings). Avoid flashing valuables in crowded markets. Carry your passport or a notarized copy at all times -- police can ask for identification.
The border area with Tajikistan in the Batken region has historically seen tensions, though a 2025 bilateral agreement has calmed the situation. Check current advisories before traveling there.
Health
Medical facilities in Bishkek are adequate for basic treatment but limited elsewhere. Bring a good first-aid kit for mountain travel. Tap water is not safe to drink outside Bishkek -- use bottled or purified water. Recommended vaccinations include hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid and rabies. Consider altitude sickness medication if you plan to trek above 3,000 meters. Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended.
Communications
Mobile coverage is good in cities and along major roads but patchy in the mountains. Buy a local SIM card from providers like Beeline, MegaCom or O! at the airport or in Bishkek. Data is cheap and useful for maps and translation apps.
Electricity
220V, 50Hz. Sockets are the European two-pin round type (Type C and F). Bring an adapter if you are coming from outside continental Europe.
