Tamga Tash

Boulder south of Tamga carved with the Buddhist mantra Om Mani Padme Hum.

Tamga Tash is the small, strange anchor that gives Tamga its name. The boulder carries the Buddhist mantra Om Mani Padme Hum, a reminder that this side of Issyk-Kul sat on old routes where Tibetan and Central Asian worlds brushed against one another.

The site is not heavily interpreted, and it is easy to miss without local help. Ask in the village before setting out, bring water, and treat the rock with respect rather than as a backdrop for scrambling.
