Tamga

Quiet south-shore Issyk-Kul village near Buddhist inscriptions, red hills, and mountain gorges.

Tamga is a small village on the quieter south shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, set just inland from the beach and backed by the dry foothills of the Terskey Ala-Too. It is not polished, and that is its appeal: guesthouses, lake air, dusty lanes, and easy access to some of the south shore's best short excursions.

The village takes its name from Tamga Tash, a rock bearing a Buddhist mantra in the hills south of town. Nearby, Skazka Canyon turns soft red and yellow sediment into strange little ridges and towers, while Barskoon Gorge climbs from the lake road into waterfalls, spruce, and high pasture.

Tamga is best for travelers with their own wheels or time to hire a taxi for the day. If you only want cafes and an easy lake resort, the north shore is simpler. If you want a low-key base for the south shore's rock, water, and mountain scenery, Tamga earns its place.
