Vat Chom Khao Manilat sits on a small hill at the top of a long flight of steps above Huay Xai town. It is an active Buddhist temple — monks in residence, daily prayers — with a sim (ordination hall) decorated with murals depicting the life of the Buddha. The views from the terrace over the Mekong and across to Chiang Khong on the Thai bank are excellent, particularly at sunset.
The walk up takes about five minutes from the main street. The temple is worth visiting early in the morning when the monks conduct their almsgiving rounds, or in the late afternoon when the light is warm. Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered — and remove your shoes before entering the buildings.
