Laos

Landlocked Southeast Asian country shaped by the Mekong River, mountains, forests, and Buddhist towns.

Laos is Southeast Asia's most languid country, a place where the Mekong River sets the pace and nobody rushes. Landlocked between Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, China and Myanmar, it remains one of the region's least developed nations -- and that is a large part of its appeal. With a population of around 8 million, it feels blissfully uncrowded.

The country is dominated by mountains and jungle. Rugged ranges cover more than 75 percent of the land, and roughly half is still draped in primary forest. The Mekong flows along the western and southern borders, and most of Laos's important towns -- Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Pakse -- sit on its banks.

Luang Prabang, the former royal capital, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and arguably the most beautiful small city in Southeast Asia. Saffron-robed monks collect alms at dawn, French colonial buildings line quiet streets, and the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers frame the old town on both sides. Further south, Vientiane is the world's most laid-back capital, with gilded temples, French bakeries, and rice paddies within city limits.

Beyond the cities, Laos rewards the adventurous. The turquoise pools of Kuang Si Falls near Luang Prabang are stunning. The mysterious Plain of Jars near Phonsavan has never been fully explained. The 4,000 Islands of Si Phan Don in the far south offer hammock time on the Mekong with rare Irrawaddy dolphins nearby. And the Laos-China Railway, which opened in 2021, now whisks you from Vientiane to Luang Prabang in two hours -- a journey that once took a full day by bus.

Laos is a communist state that has cautiously opened to tourism. The infrastructure is basic in places, the roads can be rough, and outside the main towns English is limited. But the Lao people are famously gentle and welcoming, the food is excellent, and the landscapes are extraordinary. If you want Southeast Asia without the crowds, this is where you come.
