Ban Nam Di

Ban Nam Di is a Lanten (Lao Huay) village about 3 kilometres from the centre of Luang Namtha, easily reached by bicycle or on foot. The Lanten are one of the region's more accessible communities for visitors: they have a long tradition of papermaking and indigo dyeing that makes for a straightforward cultural demonstration, and the village receives visitors regularly through the guide service.

Traditional bamboo paper is made here using methods unchanged for centuries, and visitors can watch the process from pulping to drying. Finished paper is sold as a village product and makes a distinctive souvenir. The village is also known for indigo-dyed textiles in a deep blue that is characteristic of Lanten craft. A brief visit of an hour or two is easily combined with a cycling trip around the valley.

A story
The Lanten people of Ban Nam Di produce paper from bamboo pulp using a method they brought from Yunnan province centuries ago, when their ancestors migrated south. The paper is used primarily for ceremonial texts — handwritten religious manuscripts that record Lanten spiritual traditions. The papermaking technique involves soaking bamboo strips, beating them into pulp, and laying the pulp on cotton screens to dry in the sun. The finished paper has a distinctive texture and slight translucency that distinguishes it from mass-produced alternatives.
