The flat valley floor around Luang Namtha is ideal for cycling, with quiet roads passing through Lao, Akha, and Lanten villages against a backdrop of forested mountains. Rental bicycles are available from guesthouses and shops in town; half-day and full-day circuits to nearby villages are easily self-guided with a basic map.
The most popular routes head northeast toward the Nam Ha river communities or southwest to Ban Nam Di. The valley roads are mostly flat and paved; the track sections require a mountain bike. Cycling is also a good way to access the trailheads for longer walks into the hills — ride to the edge of town and then continue on foot. The ride is most comfortable early morning before the heat builds; the mountain backdrop in the morning light is particularly good.
