That Ing Hang is a 16th-century Buddhist stupa of major religious significance for Lao Buddhists in the south of the country. The white-and-gold stupa rises about 26 metres and is the focal point of a temple compound that draws pilgrims throughout the year. The main festival — the That Ing Hang Festival — falls in November or December and brings large numbers of worshippers from across the region.
The inner sanctuary is closed to women; men can enter and view the Theravada Buddhist interior. The drive from Savannakhet is about 15-20 minutes northeast on Route 9; a tuk-tuk will take you there and wait. The compound is peaceful on ordinary days outside festival periods, with monks in residence and a small market selling offerings and food near the entrance.
