Deir el Qamar Synagogue

A small seventeenth-century synagogue tucked into the lower streets of the town, the only synagogue in Mount Lebanon outside Beirut and one of the oldest in the country. It served the Jewish merchant community that lived alongside Druze, Maronites, and Sunnis under the Fakhreddine emirate.

The building has been closed and not used as a synagogue for decades; the interior is sometimes accessible by arrangement with the municipality but is more often locked. The stone facade with its low arched doorway is worth a look as you walk through, and the lane outside gives a quiet section of the old town few tourists bother with.
