Bukit Mertajam Morning Market

The wet market near Jalan Pasar in the old town is worth an early morning visit. It runs daily from around 6am and winds down by noon. The stalls cover fresh produce, fish, poultry, and a range of prepared foods that reflect the town's mixed Malay, Chinese, and Indian character: Hokkien noodle stalls, roti canai spots, and the occasional Malay kuih maker working from a portable tray.

This is a working market, not a tourist one. Most stall-holders speak Hokkien or Malay but minimal English, and prices are generally lower than in George Town. It is one of the better places in the Seberang Perai area to observe the everyday food culture of a mainland Penang town without the self-consciousness that comes when tourists become part of the picture.
