St. Anne Church is Bukit Mertajam's best-known landmark and one of Malaysia's major Catholic pilgrimage sites. The older church dates from 1888, and the wider complex draws large crowds for the St. Anne's feast celebrations in late July.
Outside the festival period it is much quieter, with a broad church compound, stations of the cross, and a hill setting that makes it feel removed from the busy town below.
