Peace Park and Surrender Point

Peace Park and Surrender Point sit together at Layang-Layangan on Labuan's coast. This is where Lieutenant General Masao Baba formally surrendered Japanese forces in Borneo to Major General George Wootten on 10 September 1945, ending the occupation after a costly campaign.

The site is modest, which helps. Surrender Point marks the historical moment; Peace Park broadens it into a place of reconciliation, with a Japanese-built memorial and sea views. Visit after the war cemetery and the island's wartime geography starts to make sense.
