Wildlife Hides (Bumbun)

Taman Negara maintains a series of wildlife hides, known locally as bumbun, overlooking salt licks and riverside clearings where animals come to drink and feed. Staying overnight in one is one of the park's most atmospheric experiences. The hides are basic wooden structures raised off the ground, equipped with sleeping platforms and a viewing window overlooking the clearing below.

Wildlife sightings vary enormously. On a good night you might see tapir, sambar deer, barking deer, elephants, and various small mammals. On a slow night you see nothing and the forest itself becomes the show — the chorus of insects, the calls of nightjars, and the rustle of the undergrowth. Bumbun Tabing and Bumbun Kumbang are the most accessible, reachable by a short boat ride across the river from Kuala Tahan. Bookings are made through the park office.

A story
The park maintains several bumbun — raised wooden hides overlooking salt licks and forest clearings. Staying the night in one is an exercise in patience: you sit quietly in the dark, listening to the forest, waiting. The salt licks draw tapir, barking deer, and sambar. Elephants pass through occasionally. Nothing is guaranteed, but on a still night the sounds alone — cicadas, nightjars, the distant whoop of gibbons — are worth it.
