Tioman Airport is one of the more memorable arrivals in Southeast Asia: a short grass and tarmac strip cut into the jungle between the beach and the rainforest-covered hills, handling tiny turboprop aircraft from Kuala Lumpur. The terminal is a modest building near the Berjaya Tioman Beach Resort end of the sealed road, and the entire approach — low over the water, banking between hills, then a short sharp landing — gives a genuine sense of how remote Tioman actually is.
The airport is operated by Berjaya Air, which runs scheduled services from Subang near Kuala Lumpur. Flights are small and weight restrictions apply, so pack accordingly. The alternative is the ferry from Mersing or Tanjung Gemok on the Johor coast, which takes two to four hours depending on the service. Most travellers combine a ferry in with a flight out, or vice versa.
