Arkhangai

Central Mongolian province of steppe, hot springs, volcanic landscapes, and Khangai Mountain valleys.

Arkhangai is a province in central Mongolia, a region of rolling steppe, volcanic formations, and hot springs set against the backdrop of the Khangai Mountains. The provincial capital Tsetserleg is one of the more pleasant small towns in the country, nestled in a valley with a hilltop monastery above it.

The province is crossed by the Orkhon River, and the Orkhon Valley — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — contains the ruins of Karakorum, the ancient Mongol capital. The Orkhon waterfall and the surrounding grasslands are popular with visitors on overland tours between Ulaanbaatar and the western provinces. The Taikhar Chuluu, a massive boulder covered in ancient petroglyphs and Tibetan script, is another roadside attraction worth a stop.

Arkhangai is horse country. This is one of the best parts of Mongolia for multi-day horseback treks through open steppe, staying with nomadic herding families along the way.
