Several ger camps operate within and around the Gun-Galuut Nature Reserve, ranging from basic nomadic family camps to more organized tourist operations. Staying in a ger camp overnight changes the experience entirely — you see the steppe at dusk and dawn when the light is best and the wildlife most active, and you get a feel for the pace of life in this part of Mongolia that a day trip cannot provide.
Camp life typically follows the rhythm of the livestock: horses are corralled in the evening, sheep and goats return from grazing, and meals centre on mutton and dairy. The food is simple, filling, and genuinely prepared this way because it's what people eat, not because it's been designed for tourists. At night, well away from any light pollution, the sky over the steppe is extraordinary.
Camps vary considerably in quality and price. The tourist-oriented camps offer more comfortable beds and better English; family camps offer a more authentic experience but require more flexibility. Tour operators in Ulaanbaatar can arrange transportation and accommodation. The drive from Ulaanbaatar takes about two and a half hours on a mostly paved road.
