Ikh-Gun and Ayaga Lakes

The twin lakes of Ikh-Gun and Ayaga, fed by the Kherlen River, are the ornithological heart of Gun-Galuut. The Kherlen is the longest river in Mongolia and its wetlands here attract migratory waterbirds in enormous numbers during spring and autumn. White-naped cranes, bar-headed geese, and demoiselle cranes are among the regular visitors; the lakes also support resident populations of swan, duck, and wader species through the summer.

The birdwatching is best at dawn and dusk. Ger camps near the lakes will typically arrange early-morning walks to good viewing spots, and the guides have a detailed knowledge of which species are present at different seasons. Binoculars are essential — the reed beds can be extensive and the birds keep their distance.

A story
Ikh-Gun Lake lies in the Kherlen River valley and during spring migration can hold tens of thousands of birds in a single morning. Mongolian ornithologists have recorded over 200 bird species in the Gun-Galuut reserve, including several globally threatened cranes and geese that make no other regular stop in Central Asia.
