Steppe Wildlife

The open steppe of Gun-Galuut supports a range of mammals that have become rare across much of Mongolia's populated areas. Mongolian gazelle are the most visible — graceful, fast animals that move in fluid groups across the grassland. Argali, the largest wild sheep in the world, inhabit the higher slopes of the Baits and Berkh mountain ranges. Wolves and foxes are present but rarely seen.

Horseback riding is one of the best ways to move through the reserve — it is quieter than a vehicle and allows you to approach animals more closely. Ger camps in the area can typically arrange horses and guides by the hour or for longer treks into the uplands. In early morning, before the steppe heats up and the gazelle begin to move, you can watch from a single spot as the landscape comes alive.

A story
The Gun-Galuut reserve is one of the few places near Ulaanbaatar where you can still see Mongolian gazelle in reasonable numbers. These animals once migrated across the eastern steppe in herds of millions — one of the great mass movements of large mammals on earth — but habitat pressure has fragmented their range. Gun-Galuut represents an island of intact habitat close enough to the capital to reach in a few hours.
