Abu-Bakr Siddiq Central Mosque

Main mosque of Ölgii and a clear sign of the city's Kazakh Muslim identity.

The Abu-Bakr Siddiq Central Mosque gives Ölgii a look and rhythm unlike most Mongolian cities. Its green dome and minarets stand near the centre of town, and the building is a useful reminder that Bayan-Ölgii is culturally tied as much to the Kazakh steppe as to Ulaanbaatar.

Non-Muslim visitors should be respectful and discreet, especially around prayer times. Even if you only see it from outside, the mosque helps explain why Ölgii feels so different from central Mongolia.
