Upallokot is a hilltop fortification that sits above the main Gorkha Durbar complex, reached by a further climb from the palace's upper battlements. It is smaller and more rugged than the Durbar below, without the elaborate temples and carvings, but the views from the top are exceptional — on a clear morning, the Himalayan panorama extends from Dhaulagiri in the west to the Ganesh Himal range in the east.
The site requires some scrambling and is best visited by those comfortable with steep, uneven ground. It is rarely crowded — most visitors stop at the Durbar and do not continue upward — which means you get the views largely to yourself. Allow an extra 30–45 minutes from the Durbar complex.
