Chandragiri Cable Car

The Chandragiri cable car runs from a station near the Thankot border area southwest of Kathmandu to the hilltop of Chandragiri at 2,551 metres, giving panoramic views over the Kathmandu Valley and, on clear days, of the Himalayan range from Dhaulagiri to the Gaurishankar massif. The cable car itself takes about 10 minutes and is a modern installation opened in 2016.

At the top there is a small Balachand Mahadev temple, a viewpoint tower, and a garden. The mountain views are best in October–November and March–April, when the air is clear. The cable car runs daily; last descent is usually around 5pm. A taxi from Thamel to the base station takes 30–40 minutes depending on traffic.
