Nepal's National Museum is in the Chhauni area of western Kathmandu, in a former military fort that dates to the 17th century. The collection spans Buddhist and Hindu art, weapons (an impressive collection of 17th–19th century guns, swords, and armour), and natural history. The art collection is particularly strong on medieval metalwork — bronzes of Buddhist and Hindu deities made in Nepal's distinctive style, which influenced Tibetan religious art for centuries.
The museum is less visited than the major temple complexes and is often quiet, which makes it one of the more relaxed places to spend a few hours in the city. The grounds also contain a gallery of royal portraits and a garden with stone sculptures. A combined ticket with some other monuments is usually available.
