Patan Durbar Square

Malla-era royal square dense with temple architecture

The old royal square of the Malla kings is one of the densest concentrations of temple architecture in Asia. The Krishna Mandir — a 17th-century stone temple built in the shikhara style, unusual for Nepal — anchors the southern end of the square. The royal palace along the eastern edge contains a series of courtyards, including the exquisite Sundari Chowk with its carved stone water tank. The square was badly damaged in the 2015 earthquake, and restoration work continues, but it remains extraordinary.
