Unmatta Bhairav Temple

The Unmatta Bhairav Temple stands in the main courtyard area of Panauti, dedicated to a fearsome aspect of Shiva worshipped across the Kathmandu Valley as Bhairav. The temple is smaller and less celebrated than Indreshwar Mahadev nearby, but its carved struts and decorative woodwork are finely executed and attract less of a crowd. The deity inside, accessible only to Hindus, is a tantric image of considerable age.

The name Unmatta means "mad" or "intoxicated" in Sanskrit, one of the 64 forms of Bhairav. Festivals associated with the Bhairav cult are celebrated here with considerable energy — more so than the sedate atmosphere of most visiting days would suggest. If you are in Panauti during a festival period, this temple is worth checking.
