Kanchenjunga Views

From Phidim and the hills around it, Kanchenjunga dominates the northern horizon on clear days — a 8,586-metre wall of ice and rock that dwarfs everything else in the landscape. The best viewpoints are on the ridgeline above town, where the Himalayan panorama unfolds from the Everest massif in the west to the Kanchenjunga massif in the north and the Sikkim ranges to the east.

Early morning offers the sharpest views before clouds build over the peaks. The walk up from the bazaar takes about 40 minutes on a well-worn path through terraced fields and small cardamom gardens. Bring warm clothes — the ridgeline is several hundred metres higher than the town centre and catches the wind.

A story
Kanchenjunga was long believed to be the highest mountain in the world — the survey that confirmed Everest's supremacy wasn't completed until 1852. Locals in Sikkim and eastern Nepal regard the massif as sacred, and climbers approaching the summit traditionally stop a few metres short of the top out of respect.
