Asasang Peak

The highest summit in the Kuwol range

Asasang, sometimes transliterated Asarambong, is the highest peak in the Kuwol range at 954 metres. The ascent from the Samsong side is a sustained 800-metre climb through pine and oak forest, with the final stretch over bare rock to a small summit cairn. On clear days the view stretches west to Haeju Bay and the islands of the Yellow Sea, and east across the rolling agricultural country towards the Taedong River.

It is the centrepiece of the small DPRK-published guidebook to the Kuwolsan range and the hike most likely to be on offer to a tourist group with an interest in walking. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are the most pleasant seasons; summer brings dense humidity and the risk of afternoon thunderstorms.
