The Samsong Pleasure Ground is a stretch of valley below the main Kuwolsan peaks developed in the 1980s as a domestic recreation area. There are picnic clearings, simple bathing facilities along a stream, and a handful of single-storey rest houses for North Korean workers on state-organised holidays. In summer it is one of the few places in the province where locals on time off can be observed at leisure.
Foreign tourists rarely linger here, but it is the most easily seen part of the range and a useful counterpoint to the staged urban tours of Pyongyang — a glimpse of how ordinary North Koreans spend a state-issued day off.
