The Sangwon valley climbs north from the visitor area into the heart of the Myohyang massif. The path is paved in stretches with stone slabs and passes a sequence of waterfalls — Sangwon, Inho, and Ryongyon — with painted pavilions perched on rocky overhangs above the stream. The light through the pines is striking, and the air is genuinely cooler than at Pyongyang.
Most tour itineraries allow a couple of hours here. The full trail to the upper peaks takes most of a day and is rarely on offer, but the lower stretch to the first waterfalls is easy walking and gives a real sense of why these mountains are considered one of the country's six famous scenic areas.
