Ilyasi Mosque

Mosque in Nawan Shehr known for the cold spring that bubbles up inside it

A small mosque on the eastern edge of the city, in the Nawan Shehr suburb. The unusual feature is a natural spring that emerges through the floor of the courtyard into a stone-lined pool — the water is cold and clear year-round and is regarded locally as having curative properties. Many visitors come specifically to drink from the spring.

The pakora shops in the lane outside the mosque are famous for their pakoras, which are widely considered the best in Abbottabad. Combine a visit to the mosque with a snack from one of these places for a brief but characteristic outing.

A story
The mosque was built in 1932 around a natural spring believed to have curative properties. The cold water bubbles up from the floor into a stone-lined pool used both for ablutions and, locally, for drinking.
