Banjosa Lake

A dammed lake set in dense pine and oak forest at about 1,980 metres, Banjosa Lake is the reason most visitors come up here. The water is clear, ringed by a walking path that takes around 40 minutes at an easy pace, and there are paddle boats and rowing boats for hire by the hour. Trout fishing is permitted with a permit from the Fisheries Department.

The lakeside has a Tourism Department resthouse and a few simple eateries selling tea, parathas, and grilled fish. Weekends bring crowds from Rawalakot and Islamabad — come midweek for the place at its quietest. The pine-scented air and the absence of traffic noise are the real luxuries.

A story
The lake is artificial — dammed in the 1980s for water storage — but the surrounding pine forest predates it by centuries and gives the basin a settled, almost alpine feel that you don't expect a few kilometres above the plain.
