Tattapani Hot Springs

About 26 kilometres north of Kotli along the Poonch River, Tattapani is the area's most distinctive natural attraction. The sulphur hot springs emerge directly from the riverbank and from rock faces above the water, and bathing pools have been developed where the spring water can be mixed with cooler river water to a tolerable temperature. In winter the springs draw visitors from across Azad Kashmir and beyond — the combination of cold mountain air and steaming mineral water is hard to resist, and local belief holds that the water cures skin conditions and joint ailments.

The setting is scenic: the Poonch flows through a steep-sided valley here, with forested hillsides rising on both sides and the occasional cliff face. There are basic facilities — changing rooms and some food vendors — but this is not a resort. Bring your own towel and be prepared for company on weekends.

A story
Tattapani means "hot water" in Punjabi and Urdu, and the springs here live up to the name: the water emerges at around 60°C, far too hot to bathe in at source. Scientific study of the springs has found they are fed by a geothermal system related to the tectonic collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates — the same forces that built the Himalayas are pushing hot water to the surface here along the Poonch River valley.
