Old City Gates

Bhera's old city is enclosed within a historic wall with eight gates, a layout that mirrors the famous walled city of Lahore. Several of the gates survive in reasonable condition, though most have been absorbed into the surrounding urban fabric of shops and houses rather than standing free. Walking the perimeter of the old city and entering through the historic gates is the best way to experience the town's medieval street plan.

Inside the gates, the lanes are narrow and often shaded by upper storeys that lean toward each other across the alley — a characteristic of pre-modern Punjab architecture designed to keep the summer sun off the street. The bazaar area near the centre of the old city is lively and sells the traditional foods Bhera is known for: phenia, patisa, and wariya. It is an authentic working old city rather than a preserved tourist site, which gives it a texture that more heavily visited places have lost.

A story
Bhera's eight-gate walled city shares its basic layout with Lahore's old city — both are dense, rectangular urban cores with gates at cardinal and diagonal points. The comparison is apt: Bhera was a significant regional centre long before Lahore grew to dominate the Punjab. The gates here are smaller and less ornate than Lahore's famous Walled City gates, but several survive in recognisable form, and walking the circuit reveals how deliberately the old city was planned.
