Rakaposhi Base Camp Trek

The trek to Rakaposhi Base Camp is one of the most accessible serious mountain walks from Gilgit. The trailhead is at Minapin village, a short drive north of Gilgit on the Karakoram Highway, and the walk to base camp takes two to three days at a comfortable pace. The route climbs through forest and moraines to a high camp on the glacier with direct views of Rakaposhi's south face.

This is a walk-in trekking route — no technical climbing gear required — though the altitude (base camp sits around 3,700 metres) means acclimatisation days in Gilgit are worthwhile before heading up. Porters are available at Minapin and are a sensible investment: the loads are heavy and local knowledge of conditions is valuable. The trek can be combined with a visit to Hunza Valley, making a logical multi-day loop from Gilgit.

A story
Rakaposhi, at 7,788 metres, has one of the greatest vertical rises of any mountain in the world: the south face rises approximately 5,800 metres from the Hunza Valley floor in a single sweep. For mountaineers it is the defining feature of the Hunza landscape. The base camp trek puts you on the glacier at the foot of this face — close enough that the scale becomes almost incomprehensible.
