Cemetery R-37

On the southern edge of the lower town lies the burial ground archaeologists know as Cemetery R-37, the largest cemetery so far excavated at Harappa. Over a hundred graves have been opened, the bodies laid out on their backs with the head to the north, accompanied by pottery vessels, bangles, and copper mirrors. The cemetery gives a rare human face to what is otherwise a city of bricks and seals.

There is little above ground to see today — the burials have been reburied to protect them — but the location is marked and the site map at the museum locates it on the larger plan. The cemetery is worth the short detour for the sense of scale it adds to the city.
