Altit Fort sits on a dramatic cliff edge about 1.5 kilometres from Ganish, directly above the churning Hunza River. It is one of the oldest structures in Gilgit-Baltistan, with origins dating back at least 900 years, and was the ancestral seat of the ruling family before Baltit Fort assumed that role. The fort was restored in the early 2000s by the Aga Khan Cultural Service and is now open to visitors.
The views from the ramparts are among the best in the Hunza Valley — the river a silver thread far below, the ancient village of Altit clustered beneath the fort walls, and the ice-capped peaks of the Karakoram rising on all sides. A guided tour takes about an hour and covers the royal apartments, the throne room, and a small museum of Hunza crafts and historical objects.
