Navalrai Clock Tower

A Victorian-era clock tower in the Saddar district, built during the British colonial period in the late nineteenth century. Named after a prominent local Hindu merchant, Navalrai Hotchand, who funded its construction, the tower stands at a prominent junction in what was once the commercial heart of British Hyderabad.

The tower is a useful landmark in Saddar and gives a sense of how the British remade the city's public spaces in their own image — the colonial Saddar district stands in sharp contrast to the organic lanes of the old city to the north. The clockwork mechanism is of British manufacture and was still functioning long after Partition, though its current condition varies.
