GT Road Chai Stalls

The tea stalls scattered along the Grand Trunk Road through Kamra are the social infrastructure of the town. Small, often open-fronted, with benches or plastic chairs outside, they exist to serve the constant flow of road traffic with hot, sweet chai and a brief rest.

Pakistani dhaba chai is made by simmering tea leaves with milk, water, and sugar — sometimes with cardamom — until the mixture thickens slightly. It is sweet, strong, and warming, and is served in small cups or glasses. The price is negligible. These stalls open early and close late; many operate around the clock to catch the overnight truck traffic on the GT Road.
