Karachi Fish Harbour

The Fish Harbour at Karachi is one of the busiest fish-landing facilities in South Asia, supporting an industry that employs tens of thousands of fishermen and traders across the region. The docks handle the catch from the deep-sea fishing fleets that operate in the Arabian Sea, as well as smaller inshore boats from the Karachi coast. The harbour complex includes the main auction floor, ice factories, processing facilities, and the neighbourhood of Machar Colony, home to the bulk of the city's fishing community.

Visitors who time their arrival for the early-morning auction (typically 4–7 am) will find one of the most intense and atmospheric fish market experiences in South Asia: the noise, the smell, the stacks of crushed ice, and the rapid-fire bidding for thousands of kilograms of fish. Several waterfront restaurants near the harbour serve fresh fish for lunch, and the Keamari Boat Basin area, a short distance away, has food stalls where you can eat grilled catch straight off the boats. The harbour is accessible by taxi or rickshaw from the city centre.

A story
Karachi is Pakistan's main fish-landing port, and the Fish Harbour handles thousands of tonnes of catch annually from the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman. The fish market opens before dawn — by 4 am the trading floor is in full voice, with buyers from restaurants and wholesale traders bidding for the day's catch of pomfret, king prawns, snapper, hammour, and ribbonfish. Visiting at this hour is possible with a bit of initiative and gives a completely different perspective on the city from what most tourists see.
