Gulshan-e-Jinnah — officially named in honour of Muhammad Ali Jinnah but widely known by its older name, the Polo Ground — is a large public park in the heart of Saddar, one of the few substantial green spaces in central Karachi. The park covers several hectares of lawns, trees, and walking paths, and serves as a communal breathing space for the surrounding dense urban area. Families gather here in the late afternoon, cricket is played on any available patch of grass, and the atmosphere on a Friday is close to that of a public festival.
The park contains a number of civic monuments and is surrounded by some of Karachi's more significant colonial-era buildings. The Governor's House borders the park to the south, and several of the large institutional buildings along the park's perimeter date from the late British period. The park itself was laid out as a military polo ground in the nineteenth century, and the formal layout — long central grass strips with tree-lined borders — still reflects that origin. It is also one of the most convenient places in Saddar to simply sit and watch the city, away from the noise of the surrounding streets.
