Empress Market

Colonial-era market hall bursting with spices and produce

Built in 1889 during British rule and named after Queen Victoria, Empress Market is one of Karachi's oldest and most chaotic bazaars. The Gothic Revival clock tower marks the entrance to a sprawling complex of covered halls and open-air stalls selling meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, spices, and household goods.

The spice section is the most atmospheric — sacks of turmeric, cumin, dried chilies, and whole cardamom line narrow aisles. The fruit vendors stock seasonal mangoes (Sindhri and Chaunsa varieties in summer) alongside imports. Around the edges you'll find pet shops, hardware stalls, and sellers of traditional herbal remedies.

The market gets extremely crowded, especially on weekends. Go in the morning for the best produce and a slightly less frantic pace. The surrounding Saddar neighbourhood has plenty of chai stalls for a restorative cup afterwards.
