Gulberg is the upmarket commercial district south of the Mall, laid out in the 1950s and now the city's modern centre of gravity. The main artery is M.M. Alam Road (Food Street), a four-kilometre strip of high-end restaurants, cafes, and salons; Liberty Market, at its eastern end, is one of Lahore's main shopping areas.
Most of Lahore's better hotels, embassies, and contemporary art galleries cluster here. It is also where most well-off Lahoris live, in walled bungalows behind security gates.
