K2 and Baltoro Glacier Trek

The Baltoro Glacier trek is the defining expedition route of Baltistan, leading from Skardu through the town of Askole and up the glacier to Concordia, the junction point where the world's highest concentration of 8,000-metre peaks comes into view. From Concordia, a further camp brings you to Base Camp of K2 (8,611m), the second highest mountain on earth.

The trek is demanding. From Askole it is typically 7–10 days to reach Concordia, crossing a high-altitude glacier with no maintained path, camping on the ice or moraines, and requiring porters, cook staff, and proper equipment. The trek operates at altitudes between 3,000 and 5,000 metres; altitude sickness is a genuine risk. All trekkers require a permit, which is arranged through registered Pakistani trekking agencies.

The scenery is genuinely extraordinary — the Baltoro corridor is flanked by granite spires (the Trango Towers, Cathedral Peaks, and Paiju Peak), and the upper glacier is one of the most dramatic mountain environments accessible to non-climbers anywhere in the world. The season runs from June to September; July and August are the most reliable months for clear views.

Logistics: All expeditions must depart from Skardu. Registered trekking agencies in Skardu handle permits, porters, and equipment; allow at least two weeks for a return trek to Concordia.

A story
The Baltoro Glacier is one of the longest glaciers outside the polar regions at 63 kilometres, and the basin at its head — Concordia — is surrounded by more 8,000-metre peaks than any comparable area on earth: K2 (8,611m), Broad Peak (8,051m), Gasherbrum I (8,080m), and Gasherbrum II (8,035m) are all visible from the glacier. Mountaineers call Concordia 'the throne room of the mountain gods.' The approach from Skardu takes two days of driving and four to six days of walking.
