Akbar Birthplace

Local memorial to the birth of the Mughal emperor Akbar during Humayun's exile.

Umerkot's most famous historical claim is that Akbar was born here on 15 October 1542, while Humayun and Hamida Banu Begum were seeking refuge after defeat by Sher Shah Suri. The birthplace is remembered close to the fort rather than as a grand imperial monument.

The site matters because it flips the usual Mughal story. Before Akbar became emperor, his family was vulnerable and dependent on a desert-edge refuge in Sindh.
