Umerkot

Sindh desert-edge town where Rajput, Mughal, and Hindu stories meet around an old fort.

Umerkot, also written Umarkot, sits on the eastern edge of Sindh, close to the Thar Desert. It is a small, hot, dusty town, but it has a sharper identity than many larger service centres: Rajput history, Mughal exile, Hindu pilgrimage, and Sindhi folklore all crowd into a compact place.

The fort is the anchor. Umarkot Fort is tied to the Sodha Rajputs and to the birth story of the Mughal emperor Akbar, while the Archaeological Museum Umerkot helps put the district's older material culture in one room.

Umerkot is not an easy casual stop, and travel in rural Sindh calls for local advice. But if you are already in southern Sindh with a spare day, the town has enough history and living religious texture to justify the detour.
