Umarkot Fort

Brick fort associated with the Sodha Rajputs and the birth of the Mughal emperor Akbar.

Umarkot Fort is the town's main landmark, a walled brick fort with round bastions and a long connection to the Sodha Rajputs. It is also remembered in Mughal history because Akbar was born in Umerkot in 1542 while his father Humayun was in exile.

The fort is not polished like the great Mughal monuments farther north, and that is part of its appeal. It feels local, weathered, and tied to the desert-edge history of Sindh.
