The Walled Off Hotel

About 1.5 km north of the Church of the Nativity, on Caritas Street directly opposite the Israeli separation wall, the Walled Off Hotel is part boutique hotel, part art installation, part political statement. Designed by Banksy and opened in 2017, the building's interiors are crammed with artworks commenting on the occupation and the wall. Every room has a view of the concrete barrier.

Even if you're not staying, the hotel is open to visitors as a gallery space. The adjacent museum covers the history of the wall and the occupation. It's a sobering and thought-provoking visit that contextualises everything else you see in Bethlehem.

A story
Banksy named it to evoke the Waldorf, and it opened on March 3, 2017 — the centenary of the Balfour Declaration. Every room faces the separation wall, which Banksy has described as "the ultimate room with a view." The hotel closed in October 2023 following the October 7 attacks and reopened in December 2025 as a cultural platform.
