The Muqata'a is the compound that served as Yasser Arafat's headquarters during the Second Intifada, when Israeli forces besieged it and confined him inside from 2001 until his evacuation for medical treatment in 2004. He is buried here in a simple white marble tomb in an open courtyard, and the site has become the main visitor attraction in Ramallah.
A museum adjacent to the mausoleum tells the story of Palestinian national identity from the early 20th century to the present, with particular focus on Arafat's life and leadership. Exhibits include documents, photographs, and personal effects. Entry is free. The compound is also the current seat of the Palestinian Authority's presidency and is surrounded by government buildings; parts of the complex remain restricted, but the mausoleum and museum are open to visitors.
